Each of the parties have attracted an impressive array of advocacy groups who have given voice to their concerns in this case. In the matter before the Supreme Court, the proprietor of a bakery has asserted that his conscience rights should be recognized, permitting him to decline to provide a custom wedding cake for a same-sex couple. The State of Colorado and the same-sex couple state that this is not possible: the public accommodations law demands equal treatment for all in the commercial sphere, and does not admit of the First Amendment speech and religious exceptions that the baker claims are his to assert.
